Chapter 10: Micah

For three days, Micah picked Lavender up at her apartment, drove them to the shop, and helped her fix up the old stone building. Her mother worked the morning shift but closed at lunch so she could spend time with her friends. And both Lavender and her mother wouldn’t stop thanking him for all his help.

He focused on creating a more open floor plan to make it easier for customers to wander through without getting bottle-necked by rows of trinkets. With Lavender’s main mobile walls repositioned on the top floor, he worked on moving items into areas by type, as Lavender directed.

“I always did a mix based on a theme, but customers that want something usually are looking for a type of thing, not a color or theme.” Lavender rested in a wooden chair padded with maroon velvet. “I suppose I can still pull items for holiday displays in the window. I know they do better than regular stuff. It just hasn’t brought people in as well as I thought it would.”

“Maybe some sparkly items?” Micah held up a crystal platter. “Sun shining through this would definitely be eye-catching, at least.”

In the military, he was trained to do what he could to be unnoticeable. “Shiny things, movement, and bright colors should help.”

She picked up a nearby birdhouse and looked it over. “Speaking of moves, how does your mom like her new place? Do you think she’d be interested in a bird feeder?”

“Mom’s happy from what I hear, but I am visiting her tomorrow. I had to make an appointment.” He stifled a laugh. “She’s popular at her new place. I think she’s letting loose and trying a lot of things now that my father can’t control her life. But yes, I bet she would love a bird feeder.”

Lavender wrapped it in some bubble wrap from a nearby box of goods dropped off by a donor and placed it in a small basket with a few other things. “She was always nice to Mom and me, and these things are brand new, so they don’t fit the shop theme.”

“People donated new things?”

“Sometimes, yes.” She drew in a weighted breath. “The trouble with putting new things out is it draws everyone to them and makes the old things look worse in comparison. I’ve learned to keep only antiques in here. Except for the dried flowers and herbs. Sometimes, we grow enough in Mom’s backyard. Other times, we go picking and then dry what we can in her shed. Dried herbs are one of my bestselling products. Guess they fit the vintage look anyway,” she said despairingly.

He sat beside her. “You seem upset. I thought you enjoyed antique things.”

“I love giving old things new life, and it seemed like a reasonable business idea in a retirement community where people enjoyed things from the past—from when they were kids. I’m even old enough that sometimes, when I see things from when I was a child that have since disappeared, a memory will open up in my mind, which cascades into a string of others.
